The type of speakers to use in a studio can cause heated discussions among audio buffs. What's the perfect speaker for one will be something different for another. Speakers that sound totally unique may not be the best choice, especially for mixing. What if you do a mix on them and your music doesn't sound so good when played through some other speakers?

It would be crazy to epect a great all around mix using only one pair if monitors. Nothing wrong with working with a really good pair of speakers but since most people will hear your mix on cheaper ones you'd still need a cheap pair for reference. Maybe not really bad system but we're not talking about audiophiles here.

You need another pair that are pretty good with no coloration in the tone, but a nice natural response. The good news is we can get this type of clean sounding speaker at a very affordible price. After much research and testing I can say the M-Audio Studiophile BX5a's do a very nice job of this.

This is a company who knows this market and do a good job with many, (not all) of their products. We're reffering to the average everyday home studio and not the gear that's in the $1000's and up range.

If every piece of gear we needed was to cost a grand or 2 we'd never get a homestudio built.

The BX5a's Bi-Amp's Are What Makes The Difference

Speakers selling in a lower price range just don't have the Bi-Amps. Bi-Amps will deliver seperate power to each speaker in the monitor, the high end and lower end ones giving a better frequency response and clarity. This equals better sound and that's what it's all about. The lower-end speakers have a single amp driving power to both the high and low speakers making them sound not as clean.

If you're like me and wondered if there's much of a difference between the AV40's and the BX5a's, there is of course about a hundred dollars in price difference but also in the sound.

Depending on budget and room size M-Audio also makes the Studiophile BX5a Deluxe which means that they've added even more power making this deluxe model 130 watts power rating.
Regardless of which studio monitor you'll be using on your upcoming mixes, wattage rating aside, don't by-pass the bi-amp!
